Maria Short, owner of Short N Sweet, is the mastermind and steady hand behind our custom cakes. She is a classically trained pastry chef with over 25 years of experience. She attended the Baltimore International Culinary College and then graduated from L’Academie de Cuisine’s Pastry Arts program with honors. Lovingly created lifelike sugar flowers is just one of our specialties!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CUSTOM CAKES
Q: There are no prices listed for the custom cakes. How much does a celebration/sculpted/wedding cake cost?
A: Since each cake is a custom creation, it’s very difficult to give standardized prices. The best way to get a tentative quote for your custom cake is to fill out the cake order form above with date of the event, the number of servings desired, choice of cake flavor/filling and any design elements you have in mind. Cakes with rolled fondant and sugar flowers are priced higher, as are miniature and centerpiece cakes.
Q: How far in advance do we need to order our cake?
A: Every cake is handcrafted and baked to order. With this in mind, we need at least 2-3 three weeks for complicated cakes and 5 to 7 days for simpler cakes.
Q: What flavors and fillings are available?
A: The following is just a small sample of flavors available. If there is a flavor that you are interested in that is not listed here, please let us know. All cakes, buttercreams and fillings are made from scratch, from the freshest ingredients.

Q: Do you offer tastings?
A: Tastings are by appointment only and limited to 3 guests. The tasting fee is $20 with three flavors chosen at our discretion (usually what we are currently baking that week). Specific flavors are available to sample for $25 each with a maximum of 3 flavors.
Q: Can we just stop by and talk to you about our cake?
A: We would love to talk to you about your special cake and give you our undivided attention when doing so. To that end, please understand that we cannot accommodate drop in visits. Please schedule an appointment by emailing us using the form above.
Q: Where are your cakes made?
A: All of our cakes and everything in our bakery is handmade fresh in our certified kitchen at 374 Kinoole Street in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are food safety certified and use all professional culinary equipment. Our pastry chef, Maria, has 25 years of experience and national recognition as a cake maker.
Q: Do you require a retainer?
A: A non-refundable retainer of 50% of the order is required to reserve your date. The balance is due four weeks before the event date.
Q: Do you deliver?
A: We do deliver to the entire Big Island. Delivery fees depend on the location of the venue.
Q: Can we pick up our cake instead of having it delivered?
A: If you choose to pick up your cake and transport it yourself, we are not liable or responsible for the cake once it has left the bakery. You should prepare your vehicle so it is clean and free of items that could roll or slide into the cake. We do everything in our power to provide a well-structured cake, but please note that cakes are very fragile and break easily, drive carefully and slowly.
Q: What methods of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, checks or credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover and SNAP)
Q: What is your refund policy?
A: Cake flavor and texture is subjective. Refunds requested due to flavor or texture after cake has been accepted and picked up will not be honored. You may qualify for a store credit if the product is brought back to us and the quality of the cake flavor or texture is determined not to meet our standards (Our cakes are tasted daily to insure highest possible quality). Quality determination is solely at the discretion of Short N Sweet Bakery. Keep in mind variety in temperature and humidity may impact the flavor, overall design, or texture of the cake to some degree. Please understand we cannot control changes in texture or changes in color or shape due to weather conditions.
